A Rainy Day In Wakayama Prefecture!

When you're on a group tour in Japan come rain or shine the show must go on. It started to rain.

We have arrived at the Tonda River to visit the Takijiri-oji shrine.

Everyone went to look at the shrine, I chose to walk over to the river and check out the autumn leaves.

The rain is annoying but there's nothing to be done about it. In the distance viewed from under the bridge is the Kumano Kodo Information Center.

The rain is starting to come down really hard.

It is essential to always carry a folding umbrella. Last shot before getting back on the bus and heading for the next place.

The next stop: Hiking part of the Nakahechi trail

On the bus ride to this trail the tour guide kept telling us that the rain would stop by the time we arrived... not true.

If it's on the tour itinerary, we will do it!

It's not so bad. At least that's what I kept telling myself. It's very important to maintain a positive attitude. Just because you're soaked to the bone it's no reason to complain.

The trail is well maintained.

After about two hours of walking the the trail we have arrived at the Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine.

This place is pretty cool.

I 'd like to come back here in the future. Preferably when the weather is nicer.

And, there's more! I think there are more steps in Japan than any other country in the world. Wherever we go it's either up or down a lot of steps.

Onward we march across a rice field.

Then, out of the fog there it was... Oyunohara!

This torii gate is huge! To be more precise it's 33.9 meters tall, 42 meters wide and weighs 172 tons. Very impressive!

This area by the torii gate is where the original Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine was located but after it was washed away in a flood they rebuilt it on higher ground.

On the way back to the bus parking lot we crossed over this picturesque river.

Ginan tree leaves create a golden carpet for us to walk on.

Last shot of the day: The Yatagarasu (Three-legged Crow). I'm seeing the three-legged crow image every where.

More to come on our trip to Wakayama.

Thanks for stopping by!
Mike
